HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans currently have four quarterbacks on their roster trying to make Bill O’Brien’s inaugural squad. On Monday the first year head coach hinted that likely only three of those four would be heading to training camp in just under a month.
“Anytime you have four (quarterbacks)…I don’t think it is easy to divide the reps,” O’Brien said in his post practice press conference. “I think you can really get three guys reps in a practice. Which is basically what we’ve been doing. I know that isn’t the easiest thing for those guys but three out of four have been getting reps.”
The four quarterbacks really are two quarterbacks vying for that third QB on the roster. Ryan Fitzpatrick, the 9 year veteran who signed with the Texans this season and Tom Savage, the 4th round pick from Pittsburgh are all but locked in for two of those spots. That leaves TJ Yates and Case Keenum as the two QBs battling for the final spot heading into training camp. But nothing is locked in yet.
“We haven’t really talked about the roster, yet, as it pertains to training camp,” O’Brien said. “Everything we do will be in the best interest of the team.”
“These guys have worked extremely hard. They’ve all had really good moments. They’re very competitive. They’ve been in the building seven days a week studying on their own. Studying with myself. Studying with George mostly, George Godsey. They’ve gone out and really competed and really tried to help the team and really competed every week. It’s a really competitive situation.”
Keenum started ten games for the Texans last season, while Yates saw only limited time on the field as the Texans struggled to a 2-14 record.
